About the trade

What steel fixing is, what a fixer does, and where the trade stops. Short answers, with the detail on the service pages.

What is steel fixing?

Steel fixing is the trade of placing and tying steel reinforcement inside concrete before it is poured. Steel fixers work from the engineer's drawings and bar bending schedules, positioning bars to the specified spacing and laps, and setting cover with spacers and chairs. Once the concrete is poured the reinforcement cannot be corrected, so accuracy at this stage determines whether the finished structure performs as designed.

What is the difference between steel fixing and steel fabrication?

Steel fixing places reinforcement bar inside concrete on site, before the pour. Steel fabrication manufactures structural steelwork — beams, columns and frames — in a workshop, for erection later. They are separate trades, carried out by separate contractors, using different materials and different skills. The two are confused often enough that contractors sometimes approach the wrong supplier entirely.

What does a steel fixer do?

A steel fixer reads reinforcement drawings and bar bending schedules, sets out and places reinforcement bar, ties it with wire to the specified pattern, and sets cover using spacers, chairs and stools. The work covers ground beams, pile caps, columns, walls, slabs and reinforced concrete frames. Steel fixers also flag scheduling errors and drawing clashes before concrete is poured.

What is rebar?

Rebar is reinforcing bar — ribbed steel bar cast into concrete to carry tensile load. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, so reinforcement is placed where the structure will be pulled rather than pushed. UK rebar is supplied to BS 4449 in grades B500B and B500C, in nominal diameters from 6mm to 50mm, marked on drawings with an H prefix.

Do I need a steel fixer or a groundworker?

A groundworker handles excavation, drainage, blinding, formwork and concrete placement. A steel fixer places the reinforcement that sits inside the concrete. On smaller jobs a groundworks contractor may carry their own fixers; on larger or more heavily reinforced work the steel fixing is usually subcontracted to a specialist. If your drawings show bar bending schedules, you need a steel fixer.

What qualifications does a steel fixer need?

Steel fixers in the UK typically hold an NVQ Level 2 in Steel Fixing Occupations and a CSCS card, which requires passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. Most main contractors will not allow uncarded operatives on site. Supervisory roles usually require SSSTS or SMSTS in addition.

How much does steel fixing cost?

Steel fixing is usually priced one of three ways: per tonne of reinforcement fixed, on day or week rates per fixer, or as a lump sum for a defined package. The rate moves with bar size mix — smaller bars mean far more hours per tonne — plus congestion, access, working height, programme pressure, and whether the reinforcement is supplied by the fixer or the contractor.

What we need to price your job

Working with us

Coverage, cover, standards and paperwork. The checks a procurement team runs before they call.

What areas of the UK do you cover?

Bartek Steel Fixing Ltd works across England, Scotland and Wales. Our base is in Greater Manchester, so the North West is our most regular patch, but we mobilise nationally for packages that justify the travel. Accommodation and transport are priced into the rate up front rather than added later.

Areas covered
Do you supply the reinforcement, or fix only?

Both. Under a supply-and-fix package we schedule, procure and deliver the reinforcement and then fix it, which puts scheduling and fixing accountability with one company. Under labour supply we provide CSCS-carded gangs on day or week rates fixing against steel you have already procured. Which suits depends on whether you want to carry the material and scheduling risk.

Both routes, priced
What insurance do you carry?

Bartek Steel Fixing Ltd holds £1,000,000 public liability cover and £10,000,000 employers' liability cover. Certificates are available on request. Risk assessments and method statements are produced for every package and issued before we start on site.

Are you CIS registered?

Yes. Bartek Steel Fixing Ltd is registered under the Construction Industry Scheme and our UTR is available on request. We are set up for self-billing arrangements.

Are your fixers CSCS carded?

All operatives hold current CSCS cards. Copies are supplied with our pre-start documentation, alongside insurance certificates and RAMS. Bartek Steel Fixing Ltd does not put uncarded labour on site.

What standards do you work to?

Reinforcing steel to BS 4449, grades B500B and B500C. Bar shapes, bending and scheduling to BS 8666. Cover, lap lengths and bar spacing are always taken from the engineer's drawings and specification for the specific job — we fix to the design, we do not set it.

Can you work to our RAMS and site rules?

Yes. We work to the principal contractor's site rules, attend inductions, and comply with permit systems as required. We produce our own risk assessments and method statements for every package and issue them before starting, and can work to your documentation where you prefer.

Insurance certificates, RAMS and card copies are sent with any PQQ or subcontract pack on request.

Getting a price

What to send, how fast we come back, and how quickly a gang can be on your deck.

What do you need to give me a price?

Reinforcement drawings, bar bending schedules if you have them, programme dates including any fixed pour dates, the site postcode with any access or craneage constraints, and whether you want labour supply or supply and fix. If you do not have schedules, we can schedule from the drawings as part of a supply-and-fix package. Drawings can go to info@barteksteelfixing.co.uk.

Send drawings
How quickly can you turn around a price?

Send the drawings and bar bending schedules to info@barteksteelfixing.co.uk and we will come back with a price or a labour rate. A labour supply enquiry is quicker to price than a supply-and-fix package, where the steel has to be scheduled first.

How much notice do you need to get fixers on site?

Mobilisation notice depends on gang size and how far the site is from Greater Manchester. Call the number on this page with your dates and we will tell you what we can hold.

How many fixers can you put on a job?

Gang size is matched to the pour cycle rather than fixed to a headcount, so the number on site is set by how much steel has to be fixed between pours. Send us the programme and the tonnage and we will say what we can put on it.

Scope and capability

Job sizes, working hours, prefabrication and fixing against steel you have already bought.

What size jobs do you take on?

Packages run from single ground beam and pile cap runs up to full reinforced concrete frames, and labour supply is available at any size the travel justifies.

Do you work on domestic projects?

Our work is industrial and infrastructure concrete for main contractors.

Do you work weekends or nights?

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 18:00.

Can you prefabricate cages off site?

Yes. Ground beam, column, pile and pile cap cages can be assembled off site and craned in, which suits congested sites, deep excavations, restricted access and tight pour windows. Prefabricated cages need lifting points designed in and a crane or excavator to place them. On sites with room to work, assembly in position is often cheaper — we will say which way round suits your job.

Cages and prefabrication
Can you fix steel we have already procured?

Yes. That is our labour supply service — CSCS-carded gangs on day or week rates working against your own reinforcement. Insurance certificates and RAMS are supplied before anyone sets foot on site.
